Squint / Strabismus

What is Strabismus?

Strabismus, commonly known as squint, is a condition where the eyes are misaligned and do not look in the same direction. It can cause impaired depth perception, double vision, lazy eye (amblyopia) in children, and social or psychological distress. Misalignment can be inward (esotropia), outward (exotropia), upward (hypertropia), or downward (hypotropia).

Treatment varies by severity and age and includes:

  • Corrective lenses or prism glasses – for mild misalignment
  • Vision therapy or patching – to strengthen eye coordination or manage amblyopia
  • Surgery – to adjust eye muscles for proper alignment; success rates are typically 80–90%

Surgical correction is a safe and effective solution, usually done under general anaesthesia, with rapid recovery and excellent visual and cosmetic outcomes.
