What is PDA Ligation?

Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) Ligation is a surgical procedure to treat a congenital heart defect in which a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus fails to close after birth. This condition is particularly common in preterm infants and can cause symptoms such as rapid breathing, poor feeding, and heart failure due to abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery.

PDA Ligation is typically performed when medications like indomethacin or ibuprofen fail, or when the PDA is large or symptomatic. Surgical closure involves tying or clipping the PDA via a thoracotomy (incision between the ribs) under general anaesthesia. In some centres, minimally invasive thoracoscopic techniques may be used. Alternative treatment includes catheter-based closure, which is less invasive but not suitable for all cases—especially very small or preterm infants.

Despite potential risks like bleeding, pneumothorax, or post-ligation cardiac syndrome (PLCS), PDA ligation remains highly effective, with success rates exceeding 95% in experienced centres.

Why Choose India for PDA Ligation?

India is a preferred destination for PDA Ligation—particularly in complex or neonatal cases—thanks to the expertise available at Tier 1 private hospitals in Delhi such as Apollo Hospitals (Delhi), Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Max Super Speciality Hospital (Saket), and BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital. These centres offer:

  • Internationally trained paediatric cardiothoracic surgeons and neonatologists
  • State-of-the-art neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and paediatric ICUs (PICUs)
  • Minimally invasive PDA ligation options and advanced anaesthesia techniques
  • Dedicated international patient services and continuity of care post-surgery

Cost-effectiveness is a major advantage: while PDA Ligation may cost USD 20,000–30,000 in Western countries, Indian hospitals offer the same procedure for USD 3,000–5,000—with high success rates and comprehensive care, including pre-op evaluation, ICU stay, and follow-up.
