What is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked arteries, most commonly those supplying the heart (coronary arteries). It is typically performed to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) caused by atherosclerosis and is often recommended when medications or lifestyle changes are insufficient or in emergency situations like heart attacks.

The procedure involves:

  • Inserting a catheter with a small balloon into the narrowed artery
  • Inflating the balloon to compress plaque and widen the artery
  • Often placing a stent (drug-eluting or bare-metal) to keep the artery open

Success rates exceed 95%, with immediate symptom relief such as reduced chest pain and improved physical endurance. It’s a less invasive alternative to bypass surgery, typically performed under local anaesthesia with a recovery time of just a few days. While complications are rare, they can include bleeding, artery damage, restenosis (re-narrowing), and, in very rare cases, heart attack or stroke.

Why Choose India for Angioplasty?

India is a top destination for angioplasty due to the combination of world-class cardiology care, cutting-edge technology, and affordability. Leading Delhi-NCR Tier 1 hospitals like Apollo Hospitals (Delhi), Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Max Super Speciality Hospital (Saket), and BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital offer:

  • Highly experienced interventional cardiologists trained internationally
  • Advanced infrastructure, including robotic-assisted angioplasty and hybrid cath labs
  • Wide availability of stents (including cost-effective drug-eluting and bioresorbable options)
  • Comprehensive cardiac rehab and aftercare programs
  • Seamless services for international patients including medical visas, interpreters, and coordinated follow-up care

Most importantly, the cost of angioplasty in India is just 10–15% of what it costs in the US or UK, without compromising safety, quality, or outcomes.
